Volatility isn't the only stress test in crypto markets. Collateral is.

A collateral asset that can be frozen by one administrator is not equivalent to a bearer asset. It is a permissioned financial instrument with blockchain settlement.
Code is law, but human greed writes the loopholes. The loophole may be hidden in a custody agreement rather than a smart contract. It may be a delayed redemption clause, an undisclosed fee, a rehypothecation right, or a governance process that permits emergency changes during a liquidation cascade. Auditing Solidity cannot resolve those contractual weaknesses. Institutions will eventually demand both code audits and legal opinions that map token balances to enforceable claims.
The token economics are also less central than the market often assumes. A fixed-income token does not need an inflationary governance asset to generate value. In tokenized fixed income, incentives cannot repair weak liquidity or unclear ownership. Regulation compounds the problem. The retail interpretation is predictable. Tokenized Treasuries earn yield, GSR supports the category, and the next step must be a flood of liquidity into RWA markets. That conclusion skips the hardest part.

The first institutions to adopt tokenized fixed income may not be seeking higher returns at all. They may be seeking controlled access, reporting efficiency, and reduced reconciliation costs. That is positive for infrastructure providers, but it does not automatically translate into a liquid public market or a valuable governance token. A bank can use a restricted settlement network without purchasing an open-market asset connected to it.
There is another blind spot. Traditional institutions may prefer private or permissioned systems because those systems already satisfy their compliance and confidentiality requirements. A public blockchain can provide transparent settlement, but transparency is not always an institutional advantage. Trading firms may not want competitors to observe collateral movements, wallet relationships, or liquidity stress in real time. The public chain is not automatically the destination merely because it is technologically available.
I don't dismiss the collateral thesis. I dismiss the assumption that tokenization alone creates adoption. The strongest demand will come when a venue assigns favorable haircuts, a custodian guarantees segregation, and a legal framework survives a default. Those are slow, expensive achievements. They generate less social media attention than a new token launch, but they determine whether the asset remains usable when markets stop cooperating.
The competitive landscape also matters. Existing issuers already offer tokenized exposure to short-duration government debt and related products. A new entrant needs a measurable advantage: lower settlement costs, broader collateral acceptance, faster redemption, better legal portability, or deeper two-way liquidity. “Institutional grade” is not a differentiator. It is the minimum specification.
The danger is systemic rather than promotional. If a tokenized instrument is accepted widely as collateral and its redemption mechanism fails, the loss will not remain inside one protocol. Haircuts rise, positions are liquidated, market makers withdraw, and the same asset can become a source of correlated stress across venues. That is how a low-volatility asset becomes a high-volatility piece of market plumbing.
